UPDATE PRODUCTION MONOCOQUE

Brainport office

As more and more moulds are arriving, the production process is running at full speed. A delegation of our mechanical engineers is still located in Emmeloord, where the entire monocoque will be build. These panels have top priority, along with the roll cage.

Unfortunately, we had a major setback during our first product: after more than a week of hard labor, the bottom panel of the car was cured in the oven, but it did not separate from the mould afterward. Therefore we have a lot more work to do, which has to be done with great care to not damage the bottom panel itself. So far, things are looking good and the bottom panel seems to be of fine quality. We have already started with the other parts as no time can be wasted.

STELLA LUX IN OUR DAILY LIVES
On the 9th of March we did something we never did before! A normal family from Eindhoven used Stella Lux to test her as a family-proof car. We started at their home nearby the Evoluon where we met mother Judy. Together we went to the school of Jasmijn and Tobias and we picked them up, surrounded by jealous classmates. Afterward, we did some shopping at the local market and concluded our trip at Strijp S, where we took a family picture! It was great to see the kids enjoying the ride in Stella Lux. The video will be posted online by Eneco soon.

FIRST PARTS FOR OUR NEW CAR HAVE ARRIVED
After months of imagining what our car and the different parts will look like in real life, the first parts of the car have arrived at our office. Multiple small electronic components, our braking system, the inverters, some battery cells and even our solar cells have been delivered and are ready to be built into our car. In the coming weeks, more and more parts will arrive as the first production deadlines are approaching.

GET TO KNOW...
CAMIEL BEEREN
TECHNICAL MANAGER

Hi! As Technical Manager, I am responsible for the technical sponsorships, purchasing and supply, acquisition and external relations. My job is to involve as many great companies as possible to contribute to our project with their state-of-the-art technology. The whole car consists of thousands of different parts, ranging from expensive high-efficiency motors and solar cells to simple nuts, bolts and cables. All these parts must be delivered on time because we can not afford much delay in our tight schedule. As our entire project is based on sponsorships, my task is to arrange all these parts from companies all over the world without spending too much money. Besides standard products, we also need a lot of custom made products. For example, 90% of the suspension and steering system is custom made. Custom made means expensive, but luckily there are multiple CNC milling partners that want to contribute to our project and produce these parts.

The challenge of my job is to keep track of all the parts that are needed for the car to monitor their delivery times. This means that I am in close contact with all the engineers. In the meantime, I have the privilege to visit dozens of companies to take a look behind the scenes. I also keep approaching new ones and try to convince them to contribute to our amazing project. If essential parts can not be sponsored, I decide when and where to buy them.

WORLD RECORD DURING AUTOMOTIVE WEEK
On the 26th of March the world record for the longest procession of electric vehicles got broken with 746 fully electric vehicles. Stella Lux participated as one of the lead cars of this parade! The event took place on the Automotive Campus Helmond in the Netherlands. A lot of Tesla’s (both Model X and Model S), Nissan Leafs, Renault Zoes, BMW i3’s and Volkswagens were part of this parade.

TU/E CONTEST
Two weeks ago we received the news that we are selected as one of the top fifty ideas in the TU/e contest, a student competition of our university for innovative ideas. As one of the final fifty we were invited for speed dates sessions, where we got the opportunity to pitch our idea to several companies. It gave us new insights into how different companies view our project and how they could contribute. An inspiring afternoon for both the startups, student teams and companies! Vote here for our idea.

FIRST PREPARATIONS FOR THE CAR PRESENTATION
This month we started with the first preparations for the car presentation, one of our most important events. Of course the car herself has to be ready, but we also want it to be a spectacular show. It will probably be in the end of June, but we will announce the official date soon.
