NEWSLETTER 6: LIFE AFTER THE DESIGN PRESENTATION

SUCCESS OF THE DESIGN

TOMMIE PERENBOOM

We have reached a very important milestone: our design presentation. We shared our work with partners and family whom had the honor of getting a sneak preview of Solar Team Eindhoven’s new car. After a long period of designing we were ready to show our car.The doors of the presentation hall opened and the spectable we prepared erupted …

After the design presentation we had a surprise for our visitors: the first tangible parts were there to be seen and touched. To show our gratitude not only to them but also to you, we want to thank you too by giving a glimpse of our new car: the door.

Jan Mengelers, our President of Executive Board of Eindhoven, University of Technology, gave us a very big compliment on what we have achieved so far.

“The car is really beautiful in my opinion, what a big step ahead these students accomplished! It inspires to wee such young and passionate people working on this project, it gave me goosebumps. The presentation was clear, very professional and done to perfection. I can not wait until the car presentation on the 2nd ofJuly…”

FROM ONE EVENT

On 15 & 16 April, Solar Team Eindhoven was represented at the Hannover Messe. Martijn Lammers and Tom Selten gave a presentation to inform and inspire people also across the border.

TO THE NEXT EVENT

We also attended the AutoRAI in Amsterdam. From 16 until 19 April was Stella exposed at the InnovationLAB. From the prime minister Mark Rutte to fathers with their sons, they all saw Stella, world’s first solar-powered familiy car.

BUFFER OF THE SOLAR ENERGY

BAS GROENEN

Last month Eric explained how we collect energy from the sun. Now we have this energy, what can we do with it? We can use the energy to drive our car but we can also store the energy to use it another time. However, energy storage is not as trivial as it seems. We use batteries every day, in all kinds of devices (like our phone, laptop and camera), but this is not obvious at all. The design of a battery pack requires great attention.

The batteries we use are lithium ion batteries. These type of battery cells can store the most energy given a certain weight. We link these cells both in series and parallel to create a strong battery. This battery has to be able to power the car even when there is no sun. Since lithium ion batteries are not safe by themselves, an enery storage system is not complete without a battery management system (BMS).

Batteries have certain limits in which a battery is still safe to operate. The BMS measures the voltages and temperatures of the battery cells and decides whether it is safe to operate the car. It also feeds this information to the rest of the car so the driver is at all times informed about the battery status.

EXPANDING THE COLLECTION

On the first of April, the Automotive Week closed their event with the Driven Awards. Stella was nominated for both the jury and audience award. After a great pitch of Liselotte Kockelkoren, both awards were ours! Two great prices which we can add to our collection.

VISIT BODY ENGINEERS

As in the previous newsletter Mathijs Meulendijks said, he and 3 colleagues are producing the body of the car. The rest of the team visited them to see the progress in production. A very interesting and fun day which ended with a nice barbecue.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

One of the biggest television channels, National Geographic, will broadcast the documentary about Stella. Do not make any plans on Saturday the 25th of April at 12:35PM or Sunday the 26th at 11:40AM. Make sure you have the popcorn ready!
